Physical Chemistry for Students of Biochemistry and Medicine
نویسنده
چکیده
Unusual features of this new text are a long chapter on atomic and molecular structure, a clear summary of modern ideas about biological oxidation and reduction, and the extreme detail with which even the most elementary mathematical operations are explained. The behavior of buffers is also discussed very fully. Mathematical expressions of the laws of physical chemistry are cut down to a minimum. Medical students will like the simplicity of the author's presentation, and they will get a good idea of the value of physical chemistry in the interpretation of biochemical phenomena. It is to be hoped, however, that graduate students will not gain the impression that the book covers all the physical chemistry they need to know if they expect to use the principles of this science in biochemical research.

The medical faculty in the National University of Singapore started in 1905 but the Chair in Biochemistry was only established in 1927. For many years the biochemistry course consisted of the teaching of the organic chemistry of substances of physiological importance, nutrition, metabolism and hormones. In 1961, clinical biochemistry was introduced and in the 1980s, genetics and molecular biolo...

Objective(s) Comparison of prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) assay with crocin assay. Materials and Methods Twenty eight serum samples were chosen, PAB and the total antioxidant capacity were measured by PAB assay and crocin, respectively, and the correlation of both assays, along with their correlation with other clinical and biochemical parameters, were determined. متن کاملThermodynamic Exploration of Eosin-Lysozyme Binding A Physical Chemistry and Biochemistry Laboratory Experiment
We have developed a modular pair of laboratory experiments for use both in undergraduate physical chemistry and biochemistry. Both laboratories examine the thermodynamics of the binding of a small molecule, eosin, to the protein lysozyme. The assay for binding is the quenching of lysozyme fluorescence by eosin through resonant energy transfer. In both experiments students measure fluorescence q...

Topics have been developed in the specialty of Clinical Biochemistry but the approach used is suitable for any branch of clinical medicine. Each topic has material aimed at medical students and also postgraduate candidates for professional examina...
